Devotional Thoughts: To sin, or To Choose Righteousness?

Recently my husband and I considered selling a rental property we have. The market is good for the seller right now, but when we considered what we’d make on the house now and what it will provide for us when we have it paid off, the decision was clear! We should keep it and suffer now so we can enjoy it later. It is tempting to have a hunk of money to use for a vacation and home renovations now, but the wiser choice is to keep it and reap greater benefits that will pay more over time in the future. Keeping the rental property costs time and money. We aren’t making anything on it right now, matter of fact we were a few hundred dollars in the hole last year but we know the story doesn’t end here!

The same goes for the choices we make each and every day. Choosing righteousness today reaps blessings tomorrow. Choosing sin today reaps pain and suffering tomorrow. Ironic it’s our own choices that can destroy us.

Doing the right thing is lonely but it has saved me many times! When accusations swirl about it is God’s righteousness within me that guards me, covers me and always provides a way. While the sinful appear to be winning for now, their fate awaits. Sin provides pleasure and temporary happiness in the here and now but eventually it will destroy all who indulge. This verse reminds me of what Jesus said in Matthew 7:13-14:
“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

Righteousness is to sin as the narrow gate is to the wide gate. These are polar opposites yet we still struggle and seem to live on a continuum in between righteousness and sin. The temptation to place ourselves first is overwhelming. We are all guilty! Each one of us has dabbled in sin. The good news is we have a God who loves us, each and every one of us. By giving my life to God I gain everything! I am showered with forgiveness, I’m cared for with kindness and so much more. Step out of the darkness and feel the warmth of Light. Light wins as it exposes everyone and everything. I need not fear because I can trust in God, my Maker who knows me more intimately than any other.
