Devotional Thoughts: Light

Light and darkness, good and evil… we live within varying environments of good and evil. It’s takes a lot of darkness to overcome Just one light. It can only be overcome by being snuffed out. I’d even argue that darkness snuffing out light is impossible! Darkness might think it’s won but I know better! Just a wee bit of light makes a huge statement and cannot go unnoticed especially in a dark place. The darker the room the more noticeable the light. Light helps us find our way. Darkness hides us away. Light finds us.

What is this Light spoken of here?

Here’s the previous verses: “1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

This Word is Jesus Christ, God Himself. God is Light. When we believe, commit and follow Light dwells within us. Nothing can stamp out this Light!

I think of friends living in areas of great darkness. They are the only light. They shed Light into darkness hoping others will see and find the hope we have. Lights aren’t meant to be kept to themselves. Light illuminates. Light brings clarity. As the children’s song says, “hide it under a bushel, NO! I’m gonna let it shine.” We are not meant to hide the Light within us.

Pierce the darkness! Let your light shine!
