Devotional Thoughts: Death, Life & Seasons

“And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?” Luke 9:23-25

Jesus knew what was ahead for him. He also knew the future ahead for his followers. God also knows what lies ahead for us. Many have given their lives to follow God. Doing so requires us to set ourselves and our selfish desires aside, take up or crosses and walk this road of suffering. Try to save your life? Try to live your own way? Ironically your life will slip through your very own hands. Give up your life to God and in death you gain eternal life. Jesus talks of those who will lose their lives for His sake, for their faith, for the Gospel, the ministry. He knows his very listeners will walk this road.Martyrdom was a reality then and is a reality now. I just read today an email I received from Voice of the Martyrs. If you do not know this organization, look it up and commit to praying for the global persecuted church.

Fall is arriving. As leaves fall to their death it’s a beautiful thing. If you do not reside in an area of our globe where you are able to experience the seasons it’s a tremendous wonder. I look forward to fall every year as each tree turns color in its own timing. The leaves then lose their color, dry up and die and fall to the ground. Then winter arrives. Death will only be a season for us. In due time we will all die. I might die slowly or swiftly. One thing I can be certain of: I will die and s will you.

However, as one who takes up the cross I know springtime will come! I will be made new in body just as my soul has been made new through transformation spiritually. I was dead in my soul and now I’m alive. My body too will die but a glorious life of splendor awaits. All my eggs are in this basket! Where are yours? Will you die trying to save yourself?
